Obama Speedbumps
The DNC had their hearing today to bicker and argue about how Michigan and Florida should be seated at the convention. I put the before and after of the total delegates from how their compromise worked out over on the right.
It hurt Obama a smidge and barely affected Hillary's practically zero chances of winning the nomination.
We can see why Hillary was pushing for the delegates to be fully seated (the numbers on the right are the halves that the DNC decided on). If you double those numbers it also doubles the boost to the "total needed" which would serious impede Obama's ability to go into the convention with a majority.
As it is, Obama will make up most of the ground he's short in the final three primaries, even without any impressive victories, and would surely make it up in super delegates during or after them.
Hillary remains doomed, with rumors of further fighting to get full seating or to not count the "uncommitted" as for Obama, none of which sound realistic, even if the rules may make it somewhat possible in a stretch or two of the imagination.
The real question will be if this helps with unifying the party, or if the Hillary supporters will continue to have large blocks who will stay home or even vote McCain in November. Who can say for sure? The polling now sounds pretty bad for Obama... but there are eons in political timeframes between now and November.
Little to fear there. And this whole compromise on FL/MI was nothing more than a speedbump that the Obama campaign seem more than perfectly happy with as they are almost assuredly going to clinch it in the next week or two anyways. Why worry?
The other speedbump:
Obama has little reason to worry. Dems might though. Obama had yet another spiritual advisor go psycho on him, as a guest at the Trinity Church that he had been a member for 20 years.
That's right... had been a member. Obama has now gone the extra step and ended his membership with the Trinity Church as well.
Why? What was it this time? Well, yet another controversial religious leader, who was yet another "spiritual advisor" to Obama according to Obama, and who was also part of religious committee within the Obama campaign, and who had stumped for Obama as part of the campaign. Though not as close to Obama as Wright was for 20 years, it's still way beyond what the left had whined on and on about with McCain and Hagee.
What did he say that caused Obama to drop the church altogether? See for yourself after his brief introduction by the new leader of Trinity Church:
While the media pretty well let this issue drop because he's not as bad as Wright or as connected to Obama for them to care. He's far worse than Hagee was to McCain, which the media seemed to focus on solely so they could pull the pot/kettle/black news narrative. Pfleger just doesn't fit the current narrative of Obama being past all this. Oh well.
Oh, and I've heard way too many people sadly repeating Obama's revisionist history of his relationship with Wright as if he was "just a pastor" and was never a "spiritual advisor." I know people want to believe their candidate, but sometimes you just have to face the facts:
Obama says that rather than advising him on strategy, Wright helps keep his priorities straight and his moral compass calibrated.
"What I value most about Pastor Wright is not his day-to-day political advice," Obama said. "He's much more of a sounding board for me to make sure that I am speaking as truthfully about what I believe as possible and that I'm not losing myself in some of the hype and hoopla and stress that's involved in national politics."
So, the count is up to two black separatist-style associates that Obama not only considered spiritual advisers but also included in their campaign... one who was like family to Obama and a friend of 20 years, and the other who was a friend of few years, but years nonetheless.
It should be interesting what dirt the GOP may be digging up on Michelle Obama in spite of Obama's "pre-emptive" shielding of her in spite of her stumping for him quite a bit and entering the political fray on his behalf. After reading her senior thesis it seems pretty clear that Michelle Obama's views were at least at one time strongly aligned with the black separatist views espoused at Trinity. At one point she seemed to even imply that blacks who supported integrating with whites were "ignorant." It's one thing to see the world in black and white... it's another to do so a la Edwards' "Two Americas" and actually seem to support the concept.
Just disturbing.
Meanwhile McCain has been doing a fairly good job of bringing up foreign policy fights with Obama and filling in the news cycles with their rhetorical bouts. Mainly with Obama having to clarify what he really meant to say, when what he actually said didn't appear to be a "gaffe" or "misspeaking" or anything else, some of it was stated policy from his own website. His supporters are enjoying the technique of defending what he meant and ignoring what he said. McCain's supporters are having a blast rubbing in what was actually said and how it matched other statements and assertions made otherwise that show the "misspeaking" was exactly what he meant and the desperate tactics to appear consistent to his new approaches.
McCainiacs can only say, "Thanks for the ads!"
Should be a fun general election campaign season. The primaries are still the best I can remember. Political junkie bliss!
